Got spring gardening fever? So do we. That’s why this video by TGN blogger Scott Sexton strikes such a chord. Plus, it’s hilarious … and who couldn’t use another chuckle in their day?
Trust us … do yourself a favor and press “Play” now. This is too funny to pass up:
Then, leave us a note in the comments section and let us know: What seeds have you already planted (whether indoors or out) for your spring garden?
___________
This video was originally posted on March 2, 2018. But you should still watch it—seriously. It’s just as funny today as it was then!
The Grow Network is a global network of people who produce their own food and medicine. We’re the coolest bunch of backyard researchers on Earth! We’re constantly sharing, discovering, and working together to test new paths for sustainable living—while reconnecting with the “old ways” that are slipping away in our modern world. We value soil, water, sunlight, simplicity, sustainability, usefulness, and freedom. We strive to produce, prepare, and preserve our own food and medicine, and we hope you do, too!
After planting a few Kale seeds in my Aero Garden, waited for the green to show up, checked the little cups and found?? Nothing. The seeds were tiny and had slipped through the hole in the bottom of the cup. Start again – bigger seeds!!
So funny, isn’t it? Hey, Scott has just started the TGN musicals!
Love Love Loved this! snow is turning patchy in North Idaho and we are pushing to the 50s this weekend and beyond. So my little greenhouse is out there waving her arms and whistling and shouting, “come out and play, come out and play!” So my afternoon will be spent out there celebrating the advent of yet another gardening season upon us. Going to try a new thing from someone (Anastasias Garden) regarding imprinting my own body codes into seeds using saliva and light to encourage the plant to produce for my specific health needs. Don’t know if its hooey or legitimate so I’ll have a test plot and do a comparison of the produce as the season progresses. I have just enough belief in magic and fairies to give this one a shot! Happy gardening to all of my earth loving cohorts out there!!
OMG AWESOME!!!
I laughed until tears rolled down my face!!! That was so good. My husband stood behind me and kept repeating, “That’s Gini!” OMG I agree! We are in Minnesota under several inches of beautiful snow and dreaming & planning what and where we will be planting soon. I am searching for what will work best in my home for seed starting, too. Thanks so much for sharing this! Made my whole day.
Glad you enjoyed it! We didn’t get any significant snow this year. I don’t know what I’d do if we had several inches right now. Well, I know I’d make snow ice cream.
Very cute… I have been playing in the dirt here for the last two months in Southcentral PA. No not outside (although I have salad greens and spinach growing in my high tunnel that have overwintered), but in my basement!! My husband, God love him, built shelves and a lighting system in our old coal bin. I have about 8 flats of onions, leeks, and celery and celeriac already started, 2 flats of my first planting of peppers and eggplants, and 2 flats of herbs such as parsley, cilantro, basil, marjoram, and lemon grass. It is such a blessing to see GREEN in these remaining harsh days of winter.
Spring will come! And yes, sometimes it does take faith, huh?
Sounds like a great setup. Yes, I LOVE seeing green growth. I was able to get out and weed a couple of beds today (finally). It’s the smell that gets me. Those early spring (late winter) weeds just smell like life and a whole new year of possibilities.
Hooray! Bravo! Scott Sexton!!! He’s enormously gifted – Can’t most of us in this growing space (which is growing as they say by leaps and bounds each year) see a full Broadway show? Why not? I’m certain it would be a smash! Great family fun, highly educational, a cast of many outrageous wonderful characters, crazy funny… then off to grab the Tony Award! What a terrific way to spread the word out into the world of the trials, tribulations, disappointments, and the enormous successes of gardening! The full cycle of life presented in a way folks will be familiar with in the correlation. Perhaps that would spur folks on to sample these new tasks & develop a new passion. All positive! I’m on board and will help with PR and sponsorship!
Sounds like a plan. Hey Marjory, how’s your singing voice?
OMG! That is so me! I have lettuce coming up and sprouted my spinach in paper towels before I planted yesterday,. Have basil and parsley in my Areogrow. I’m in Indiana near Indianapolis so will just be putting out my snow peas in a couple weeks.
My wife hails from Indianapolis. That’s why she’s so much more comfortable driving in heavy traffic than me. Congrats on sprouting with a paper towel. I had to buy a seed sprouted. I get distracted and mess up the moisture level.
That was great! I just came in from clearing snow off my driveway, yet again, so it will be awhile before I get out there but I have seedlings started!
I’m really glad that people are enjoying it. I had been trying to make my first double dug garden bed, and the rain turned it into a pond. You either get mad or you laugh, right?
Awesome! What talent he has!! Hannah Eisenberg, That’s a fabulous idea – planting seeds on Broadway!!
I’m all for it. But we’ll need original music. Disney doesn’t like to share.
Genius! You’re right, Marjory—what a pick-me-up!!! 😁👍
Loved the video. Very inventive. As someone who has a chronic disease, I was struck when hearing, “If I could leave this house”, that it could be the theme song for all the millions of Americans who have a chronic illness or condition that keeps them homebound. Please take a moment to understand how deeply the chronically ill want to be who they were once upon a time.
Hi Ellie,
You know, I’ve been thinking a lot about getting some info out there about sprouting…. It’s the super easy way to get great nutrition, fast, indoors, and without needing to be an athlete 🙂 Stay tuned… I am working on it.
I don’t know the specifics of your condition, but I understand the general struggle. I have Chrohn’s disease. I’ve been in remission for several years now. But I remember the rough times. Here’s hoping you can find something that work for you.
Well done. It is hard to wait
It certainly is. I’ve finally been able to get out and weed a bit.
With a garden under some foot of snow I wish . . . . . coastal Devon, England and we don’t get snow . . . . . not normally anyway! Now that little song cheered me up – I may get going soon! Please! As he said “If I could leave this house!” but with warnings against travel all over the place why bother – for now (too cold anyway)!
Wow, that’s a lot of snow! The only time I remember getting a foot of snow here (Arkansas) was when I was in kindergarten.
An Artful performance!
I bought more fruit varieties of seed this year, less veg, as I intend to convert to a holistic Fruitarian diet to heal degenerative disc disease. Im short of somewhere to live and grow, however, so no seeds down yet and times ticking! Im in Alberta, Canada – if anyone knows of possible opportunities of land and/or people to connect with.
Thanks for the compliment. I’ve never looked into the Frutarian diet. I’ll have to look it up. I hope it helps with your back. Sadly, I don’t know of any land opportunities in Canada.
Look out Broadway! Now if someone would just write a gardening musical.
Haha. That’s a great idea. A huge undertaking, but a great idea.
Love it!! Just planted all my old lettuce seed.
Thanks. I had just started some seeds outside before all the rain hit. The poor things nearly drowned, but I think they’re pulling through.
This was terrific Scott! It made my day. I am with Ellen on those of us stuck in the house with a chronic illness, all winter stuck in afraid to go outside and get some germ that will spill into a horrible flareup or to fall down and really be in trouble. I look forward to spring where I can feel the sun and the dirt. It’s someplace where I can thrive in my garden. It’s good for me to be able to day by day get stronger because of the movement it takes to do everything there is to do in a garden and I can sit and do it. I start to feel alive again when I start to get my garden magazines and get ready to plan yet another room in my yard to make special. Thank you for putting that spark into us with your beautifully done song. You made my day.
Thank you so much. I always tell myself, “I’m not going to go crazy next year.” But then the catalogs start coming in.
Hey Scott – This is adorable! I shared it with all my gardening friends since it about sums up how we’ve all been feeling the past few weeks. Thanks for the excellent singing and creativity!
Hey Tashsa,
That’s a cute chicken you’ve got there 🙂
Well, thank you for the kind words and the shares. I’ve been enjoying your chicken videos as well.
Oh that was perfect! I can relate. After the gardener completely covered my garlic last fall, it is starting to send up its wonderful fragrant shoots!
That’s cheery news. Garlic is such a useful and delicious plant!
The video was great. You asked what I have in my garden. Inside and out. I live in Tellico Plains, TN, and the last 3 years I have been able to put out Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, and Brussel Sprouts in November to have them ready in March and dodge the Cabbage Moth, but not this year. We had extreme cold for this area this year for weeks at a time. This took it toll on the outside garden. None of the Cauliflower survived, very few Cabbage, but the Broccoli and Brussel Sprouts made it OK with very little loss. I learn something new every year, without fail. The Kale and Spinach survived and are doing well. In my greenhouse I have put in the Eggplant and Tomato seeds the last couple of days. I have also started some of my herbs in the greenhouse. I am running behind as always.
Marjory keep up the good work.
LMBO! LOVED this video! Great job!
Thank you so much. I hope you’re able to get out and enjoy the outdoors where you are.
When is this going to open on Broadway?
Ha. I’m afraid you’ll have a long wait.
Excellent!!!!!! Am I a nerd because I “get it”? I’m such a nerd that when I was giving an exam to my class I was studying the seed catalog!
I’m a nerd too, Patricia. And I might be guilty of glancing at seed catalogs during class.
Love the video. We are growing salad and tomatoes indoors while waiting to get outside. There are 2 more months beforent outdoor planting is possible here.
You have a beautiful voice! Great pick me up during a week with the flu. Enjoying, well kinda enjoying, my herbal infused raw honey. I hear educational music videos in your future.
Thanks. Glad I could be a help. I hope you feel better soon. Have you ever tried mixing your herbs with honey and peanut butter? I roll them into balls and put them in the freezer, on wax paper, to firm up. Much yummier.
What a hoot! So enjoyable, Scott!
I just put in baby corn, bush pickle, papaya squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, moved my horsetail (hope it will be okay!) and my wish is……..I was out with my seedlings…..but, it is first thing I do when I get home from work! Anybody plant bok choy? Will be my first time for that kind of cabbage!
Thanks so much for the pick-me-up!
Scott you are a riot!!!! You and my hubby need to talk permaculture and go take some classes together!
I like that idea. Know any good permaculture classes around me?
That was amazing! truly a pick me up on a gloomy day!
Hilarious! Loved it, and I totally live for those catalogs. It’s snowing here today, I think Mother Nature missed the memo, it’s supposedly spring. I have new fruit tree seeds planted so far. Took all my will power to leave them in the fridge over the winter.
Nice video, nice song, two questions:
Is the melody original?
The video was well produced (good camera work and editing)–did you do the camera work yourself or did you have a camera person?
The melody is from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”. Indoors, the camera was on a tripod. Outdoors, it was held by my 8-year old. He’s my official cameraman. Glad you enjoyed it.
Too funny. I am at work and laughed out loud when this video started to play. Definitely put a smile on my face. Thank you!
Well, it is in the summer officially and I just saw this, but you certainly nailed down how I feel every spring!!! And, for Ellie with chronic illness, I have ms and when it hits I am out of action as in out. But, I have learned to just accept any and all help, a few fried plants, failures, springs where I just throw seed at the ground and say a prayer that they come up, no joke! Anyway, and one year, the best I could do was a few African violets in a window sill while I rode out a particular nasty treatment that came during SPRING-argh. Oh, that was the worst. I think I managed a few late sweet potatoes and a few scraggly green beans late, late in the game, but, I am not above walking by and throwing seed at a bed right before a hard rain. It sometimes buries them for you:)!
Thoroughly enjoyed it, Scott. Great job. It is really fun to write lyrics to known tunes. I wrote a series of Pumpkin Carols when I was in college as a music class project and really loved doing it. Years later friends and my wife and son and I went pumpkin caroling for a number of years and everybody loved it. this was great. Thank you for sharing.
Scott I so love your posts but this one is my favorite, I loved it and I too read seed catalogs like books. Great vidoe and you have a good voice.
Oh man, this was SO FUNNY!!!!!
Hahaha! This made my day! Well done, sir.
lol… this was great.. thanks for this laugh.. .
Scott, you are too funny! LOVED the video!! (MAYBE partly because my son’s high school just did the musical Little Mermaid – he was the accompanist). Watched this twice and smiled just as much the second time. You are very creative – bet you could come up with another Disney – I mean seed/gardening/permaculture/compost – video. We could all use a good laugh these days!
Thank you, I needed that.
OMG! I love this video! Scott, you captured my heart exactly where it is….pacing to get out there. Expecting a big storm here so postponing tomato planting again…(zone8). I keep telling them (the plants) that today is their day but alas…we delay.
You are quite talented Scott. Enjoyed it! Made my day!
Beautiful voice! Nice to see a grown-up as playful as a child. Scott, you express my sentiments exactly. Spring is coming, and I am so excited at the prospect of getting outside and planting. Meanwhile, I have started doing outside jobs that need to be done anyway.
