Nutrient Dense Soil – Getting to Know Your Soil

Transcript:

Nutrient Dense Soil – Lesson 1 Transcript

Homework:

Experiment with the soil settling test!

  1. Get a clear (1-qt) jar like a mason jar.
  2. Take a soil sample from your garden
  3. Fill half the jar with that soil, and fill rest of jar with water
  4. Shake vigorously for 1 minute
  5. Let settle for 24-48 hours

Once the soil is settled into layers, it will give you a good visual representation of the proportions of clay, silt, and sand in your garden soil. Sand material will be on the bottom, then silt, then clay, then leftover organic matter.
