Homework:

Soil test!

Purchase a soil test through your local extension office online.

How to find your county extension office:

Simply “google” your State (and the words🙂 “county extension office soil test lab”

That search should bring up the link for a regional extension office that has a soil test lab.

Search their page for “soil test”

This general search should bring up the link for ordering a soil test from your regional extension office. You can pay for them online, usually between $10 and $35 or so.

Download and print the soil sample submission form and directions for that lab. Sometimes you will need to wait for the kit to be mailed to you, but most will just have a printed form that you fill out and send with your soil sample. (pre-pay for it)

Take a soil test from 5-8 random locations in your garden bed growing area.

Send the soil test to the lab.

Await results. Times vary. They take longer to get back in spring, since that is when more people want their soil test done.

Keep the test results in your garden data folder, and use as baseline for amending/fertilizing your soil.
